Netbackup exchange 2010 backups failing with error 130

Hi All,

From past few days we have been observing error 130 with exchange 2010(DAG)backups, I have checked in various symantec docs and found out issue could either be with circular logging or exchange writers but none of them are issues presently.

As far as my understanding goes. if exchange backup fails . netbackup locks the database and it needs to be removed manully to resolve the issue. while it worked for couple of mailbox, we observed backups still failing for few mailbox. finally we had to stop exchange replication services for one mail box and for other two fail over passive copy to different node and issue got resolved.

We would not like much of a change in exchange infra. Is there any way that exchange removes lock by itself rather than doing it manually or backups can be sucssful without stopping replication services or moving passive copies to different nodes.

Master server : Netbackup version 7.1 , Solaris 10

Exchange server : exchange 2010 (DAG) in windows 2008 server

Stop SLP with current image transfert

I need a solution

Dear All,

When i try to cancel a SLP (nbstlutil.exe -cancel and cancel job in activity monitor) the current image transfert doesn't stop and is still transfered.

The spoold.exe processus consumes some bandwith and puredisk destination is still growing

How can i do in order to stop SLP and current backup image transfert ?

2 Data Removal Policies for one Data Selection

I need a solution

I manage several remote PureDisk SPAs and noticed one had 2 Data Removal Policies with the same data selected. One removal policy is set to 45 days and the other is set to 15 days. my question is: Does one take priority over the other or will the 15 day removal policy always take priority because it is the shorter time frame? My concern is the 45 day policy takes priority because it has a longer retention period defined. I can't locate any info on this situation.

NBU-Duplication issue

hi guys,

 

i'm facing a strange issue when duplication images from my AdvDisk...

if i run backup with my Netbackup 7.5.0.5 to Advdisk its successful and duplicating simultaniously to puredisk the performance is  OK up to  (87000KB/SEC)

if i run backup with my Netbackup 7.5.0.5 to Advdisk its successful and duplicating simultaniously to tape LTO4 the performance is ok  OK up to 70000KB/SEC)

BUT

if duplication to both PDDO and LTO4 in the same time the performance is 43 000 KB/SEC

i spent many days reading the logs ( nbsl, nbpem, nbjm nbrb , nbstserv ,vxlogcfg etc ) i couldnt find any errors or a source limiting the performance

all what seems to me strange is when writing to tape the bptm  reporting in more than 300 lines :

write_data: writing block shorter than BUFF_SIZE, 65536 bytes

write_data: writing short block, 65536 bytes, remainder 0

seems it's related to what previously  found :

DUP_BLKSIZE  ( in bptm) are by default set to 65536 (64K) so when we duplicate to tape the read requests  pass the data in 64 , and the backups written to Advanced disk  normally on the disk array the data is being written  in 512K if it’s not  more, if  we will duplicate by passing data in 64K which is insufficient  because it will require more (Input/Output Per Second) = the performance decreasing …..

 

IS it related ????

the Master is an AIX, Appliances 5220

any help sugesstion ?

Backups on MSDP are slow (Slower than Tape)

Hi,

I have an environment of Netbackup 7.5.0.4.

The environment details are as:

Master Server: IBM AIX 6.1, Netbackup 7.5.0.4

Media Server 1 (For AIX systems): IBM AIX 6.1, Netbackup 7.5.0.4

We have and MSDP pool on our media server of 20TB. The filesystem used for this MSDP pool is symantec. (vxfs) with bsize of 8192. The memory on the system is 120GB and it is an IBM Lpar of power7 with 5 CPUs.

When i run backups on MSDP they are slower than the backups taken directly to tape.

Considering the system memory and CPU, i dont think its a resources issue. It might be that netbackup needs some tuning to use these resources.

I need help on tuning the netbackup MSDP for faster backups. I checked the value of MaxCacheSize in the file "/storage/pdc/etc/puredisk/contentrouter.cfg" and it is at 75% "MaxCacheSize=75%".

Any help will be appreciated.

Steps to run granular restore for Exchange where MSDP has been duplicated to tape?

In my environment, I keep 1 month of DAG backups in MSDP. I've had a restore request going back 3 months. Granular restores work fine for items that are in MSDP and I understand that GRT only works from disk, so I've used the Java Admin Console to duplicate most of the images from tape back into MSDP (there are a couple of tapes still offsite)

In the Java Admin Console I attempt a restore based on the date range the tape images were written; I see the DAG hiearchy and navigate down the structure and finally expand the "Database" item. This shows the list of mailboxes, I locate the one I want and click the icon to expand it and nothing happens (I expect to see a list of folders starting with "Top of Information Store")

I had this same behaviour before I duplicated the tapes back to MSDP, so not sure what's going on....

How do I query what mailboxes are in the backup images? (to check if the mailbox I want is on a tape I have duplicated or is it on a tape that is still offsite?)

Hi

I'm getting multiple error messages in the Problems / Disk Log in Netbackup 7.5.0.5 administration console:

"Error    0    33280    Task  ended on server PureDisk:SERVERNAME on host SERVERNAME.                nbemm"

Jobid=0 Type=33280 Process=nbemm

There's usually multiple (50+) entries in a row with "Task ended on server". All backupjobs are running fine, the disk pool (MSDP) have status "Up", but what does the errors mean? The only related documentation I can find is this, and it doesn't really explain anything:

The server is running on Win2008R2, NB version 7.5.0.5, using MSDP.

Advanced Disk Space v De-Dupe Disk Space - 5230 Appliance

Hi,

We have a new 5230 appliance where the internal disk has been set up (by default) in the following way:

Catalog 20% - around 930GB

Advanced Disk 16%

De-duplication Pool 64%

We intend to backup to site A, then use AIR to replicate to site B (another 5230 appliance) where the backup will be eventually vaulted off to tape. However, some data will stay at site A until its expiry date (1 year). We have various retention times and clients. 

1. Are there any calculations for the amount of catalog ratio to backups. Is 20% catalog to high, should I resize this. I know its an open question somewhat but is there any rule of thumb?

2. As you can see, I have a mixture of Advanced Disk and De-dupe disk. How do we balance between de-dupe space and advanced disk? What is the difference? We want to get the benefit of de-dupe for every backup so why wouldnt we configure the whole capacity to be De-dupe disk and have no advanced? Would I use Advanced Disk for some backups and De-dupe for others? 

So we would end up with:

Catalog 20% - around 930GB

De-duplication Pool 80%

Could someone help explain my options?

Bpexpdate query

Hi all,

i am running the bpexpdate command using - bpexpdate -backupid svr-server_1391110193 -d 02/16/2014 17:30:00 -copy 1 -force

i get no error when running this command however when i use the command - bpimagelist -U -backupid svr-server_1391110193 i get the following output:-

this output shows that the image will still expire on the original expiry date and not the one i changed it to by running bpexpdate command changing the expiry date to the 16th

this image is part of a SLP and was wondering if it is not possible to change the expiry date of an image that is part of a SLP?

Can anyone help with thi?

Systemstate restores failed with media error

Hi Friends,

 

I have tired the Systemstate restore from Basic disk & MSDP  for Windows 2008 & 2003. Both are failed with media read error 85.

Ran the image verification, it got successful. But not able to restore successfully. Master server NBU 7.1.0.2.

Any idea to fix this?

The scheduled backups are not running for the past 4 days. The cron is running and alll other puredisk is also running.We are able to see the backups that took place before 4 days. i want to know the reason for this issue and the solution for this issue.

Netbackup Appliances 5230 with PureDisk: How many streams?

Hi all,

We recently migrated to Netbackup Appliances running Netbackup 7.6.0.1 (Appliance version 2.6.0.1 )

We are running 2 appliances per site, each site is its own NBU domain (We use AIR to replicate). Each appliance is configured with a 70TB PureDisk volume.

We are quite new to PureDisk that is running on these systems, but at this moment they are limited to 80 streams maximum in the diskpool object (Which seems pretty low to me)

At the moment we are running out of resources due to this maximum that has been set.

What is the maximum streamcount a 5230 Appliance PureDisk can safely handle?

Note that we are using AIR to replicate all our images, but replication is being done during the day, not during backup times...

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

 i've this problem....on my system i've configured 2 tape library (1 have lto2 and the other run lto4) and now i would like have a policy first run on disk pool then pass the backup on tape.

 

Can I do this?

How can i create that policies?

  1. What are the precautions should I be taking?
  2. Can I directly upgrade from 6.5.1.2 to the latest version of 6.6?
  3. What is the latest version of 6.6?
  4. We are running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP1 and PD 6.6.5 requires SP2. Since these PD servers were originally Symantec builds, does Symantec provide the SP 2 media?
  5. How long does the PureDisk server upgrade take?
  6. Do all tasks/services need to be stopped before/during the upgrade?
  7. Is there a specific sequence that we need to follow (e.g. PD source server, PD clients, PD target server)?
  8. How long does the client upgrade take and how resource intensive is it on the client (should we be concerned about impacting the clients during the middle of their business day)?
  9. Can all of the client upgrades be pushed out at the same time or is it recommended to only do several (count?) at a time?
  10. If we upgrade the servers during the day (when no backups are running), can the agents (old version) still back up to the upgraded servers (in case we can't upgrade all of the clients in one day)?
  11. What will be the impact of PD server upgrade on the agents/clients which are connected to it?
  12. Should I have to worry about compatibility issue? Are there any compatibility criteria?

Please help.
