Java Console not restoring files to copy of original server, only to master media server

I need a solution

We are trying to restore a full server backup from the Java console on one of our media server, (not master media server).

The backup was taken as "Standard", and we are using Standard as the restore option.

We direct the restore not to the original server, but to a hyper VM.

In the restore log, the job tries to restore the files to the master media server.

After hardware refresh unable to import deduplicated backup images

Environment:

Master: Windows 2008 R2

Media server: Windows 2008 R2

NBU version: 7.5.0.5

Using MSDP on one of my media server. I did a hardware refresh as per the dedup guide and used the bpexpdate -nodelete command to expire images before deleting the disk pool, storage server and storage unit.

Everything went smoothly till the recreation of the new media server where I tried to use the same path as previous storage path and got this error: system call failed.RDSM has encountered an STS error:updateStorageServerConfig.

After numerous tries and work around nothing worked. I finally used new paths on the same SAN attached disk and this time it work. Now when I try to import the images I get this on activity job monitor:

16/04/2013 02:55:24 PM - begin Import

16/04/2013 02:55:28 PM - end Import; elapsed time: 00:00:04

16/04/2013 02:55:30 PM - Info bpdm(pid=1704) started

16/04/2013 02:55:30 PM - started process bpdm (1704)

16/04/2013 02:55:32 PM - Warning bpdm(pid=1704) INF - No importable NetBackup disk images found in path PureDiskVolume.

the requested operation was successfully completed(0)

Any suggestions? I have the bpdm log file if required.

I need a solution

Hi All,

Just trying to understand the contentrouter.cfg file, its located in \veritas\pdde\ and in msdp\etc\puredisk

The files look identical, so im just wondering why in both locations, and if I update the one in \msdp\etc\puredisk, i take it i have to do the same with the file in \veritas\pdde?

Thanks

Any recommendations for volume manager and file system type for MSDP on Linux...

I need a solution

Hi Forum, I've had a quick search through the DeDupe Admin Guide for v7.5 and I couldn't find any recommendations for volume manager or file system type for the MSDP database and/or data spaces.  I guess an appliances uses VxVM and VxFS - but what else might be suitable if we were to build our own Linux based MSDP media server.  The local server disks will re RAID-1, and the SAN LUNs will be:

- MSDP DB on one x 2 TB LUN from 3PAR

- MDDP data on four x 16 TB LUNs from 3PAR (i.e. 4 x PG of RAID-6 6D-2P)

I guess my question really relates to the MSDP data space - I was thinking of a simple logical volume of the four LUNs concat together and an ext4 file system on that logical volume.  Or might I be better off in carving the MSDP data storage as a concat 2 x LUNs (i.e. 2 x PG of RAID-6 14D-2P)?

And I assume a sector cluster/blocking factor of 64 KB is appropriate for ext4, just as it is for NTFS.

Anyone have any advice, or willing to share what they did and whether they ripped anything up and started again?

Creating MSDP Linux RH NBU 7.5.0.5

I need a solution

Hi,

Just a quick question. I need to get the actual path so that I can setup MSDP on a RHEL5 media server (7.5.0.5), Windows is easy since it would be E:\MSDP or whatever you would use for the logical drive letter.

NBU is installed on the primary partition and we want to utilize the full 2nd volume for MSDP but how would I find the path in the GUI Wizard?

Do I just create an MSDP folder under /home ?

MSDP question re full at 96% vs. high water mark at 98%

I need a solution

When does full disk processing take place?  At 96% or 98% ?

And doesn't this all imply that a high water mark is probably best set to something like 90% (max)or probably (85%) so that clenup can occur before it gets full.  If so, then why is teh default 98%

Page 68 of the NetBackup v7.5 Deduplication Guide:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC5187

...says this:
About deduplication storage capacity

The maximum deduplication storage capacity is 64 TBs. NetBackup reserves 4 percent of the storage space for the deduplication database and transaction logs.
Therefore, a storage full condition is triggered at a 96 percent threshold.

For performance optimization, Symantec recommends that you use a separate disk, volume, partition, or spindle for the deduplication database. If you use
separate storage for the deduplication database, NetBackup still uses the 96 percent threshold to protect the data storage from any possible overload.

If your storage requirements exceed the capacity of a media server deduplication node, do one of the following:

- Use more than one media server deduplication node.

- Use a PureDisk storage pool as the storage destination.
A PureDisk storage pool provides larger storage capacity; PureDisk also provides global deduplication.
See “About the deduplication storage destination” on page 22.

Only one deduplication storage path can exist on a media server. You cannot add another storage path to increase capacity beyond 64 TBs.

...but says this on page 82:

High water mark The High water mark setting is a threshold that invokes the following actions:

- The High water mark indicates that the PureDiskVolume is full. When the PureDiskVolume reaches the High water mark,
NetBackup fails any backup jobs that are assigned to the storage unit. NetBackup also does not assign new jobs to a
storage unit in which the disk pool is full.

NetBackup also fails backup jobs if the PureDiskVolume does not contain enough storage for its estimated space requirement.

- NetBackup begins image cleanup when the PureDiskVolume reaches the High water mark; image cleanup expires the
images that are no longer valid. NetBackup again assigns jobs to the storage unit when image cleanup reduces the
PureDiskVolume capacity to less than the High water mark.

The default is 98%.

Hi ,

I added  some disks from my dell md 3000 storage array to my linux box but for some reason these disks dont have labels assosiated with it allowing me to format them for use.. We use puredisk application and its on suse linux 10

I have a ticket open on this issue as well, but the tech I am working with is out till Sunday. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I appear to have a corrupt DO. My TSE pointed me to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH168555 But, when I run the dbutil, I dont get a container ID. Here are the results. The KB doesnt really say what to do with a corrupt DO.

When sorting though error messages in Puredisk, we have 33,611 critical error messages. the error itself has been resolved, but I would like to remove these messages. Does anyone know a way to mass delete these? Right now I can only remove them 20 or so at a time and that will take 1500  instances of me deleting and confirming.

MSDP status 2074, but volume is not down

Does anyone here have any experience yet using Cisco UCS blades as NBU media servers?

We are migrating our existing Oracle x86 and Solaris Sparc media server hardware connecting to Data Domains over NFS, to Cisco UCS blades running Red Hat Linux and fiber channel attached storage using NBU's Media Server Deduplication Pools.  We are running NBU 7.5.0.5 on all servers, and most clients are running 7.5.0.4.

We have been experiencing sporadic status 2074's during heavy backup loads on one MSDP.  But the MSDP is not actually down, and the jobs auto-retry 1-2 hours later and are successful.  I am not upping the MSDP, and I can't find any indication that anything else is cycling the services or rebooting the server.

I do not find a storaged.log or spoold.log on the server, and I just uncommented the /usr/openv/lib/ost-plugins/pd.conf line to enable PureDisk logging and cycled NBU on that server a little while ago, so I don't have any logs from that yet.

If you have worked with this combination of hardware/OS/NBU, do you have any advice on UCS tuning or settings?  We're also having other issues with TCP tuning (socket reads/writes failing).

MSDP encryption (ServerOptions=agent_crypt) (or should it be =encrypt)

$

I need a solution

Hi Forum,

Page 30 of the NetBackup Deduplication Guide v7.5 says that... by default MSDP encryption is disabled by default, but they it is recommended by Symantec.

Page 70 says that to enable encryption that we need to add "agent_crypt" to "ServerOptions=" in the ContentRouter.cfg file.

But looking at the comments in the file:

; [no]agent_crypt      : always disable/enable client-side encryption;
; [no]encrypt          : always disable/enable encryption;

...indicates that using "agent_crypt" instructs the client-side deduplication agent to encrypt data.

At our site we are not implementing client side deduplication so it woudl seem to me that setting :agent_crypt" won't have any effect.

My questions are:

1) Is "agent_crypt" really the option to use if what we are trying to achieve is encryption of the post-dedupe blocks on teh MSDP data storage local to teh MSDP media server?

2) What does the "ServerOptions=encrypt" option do, and how is it different to "agent_crypt" ?

3) If we can determine which option really does enable post-dedupe encryption - then does anyone know what the CPU overhead is ?

4) Are there any particular models of CPU (SPARC or Intel or AMD) that implement the encryption/decryption in their hardware instruction sets - i.e. are there any CPUs that are much better suited for use with MSDP encryption ?

Thanks,

Dave.

Is there a way to speed up MSDP startup?

I need a solution

I am in the process of upgrading my NetBackup environment from v7.1.0.4 to v7.5.0.5.  Master server on Linux is done as are some of my Linux based media servers.

I am now starting on my Windows 2008 based MSDP servers with one done so far.  However, I find that the bpup -v command on Windows is now taking significantly longer; seems like it now stops on the Deduplication engine (spoold) startup whereas before it didn't.  It is as if it now waits for the cache load to finish before proceeding on.  With a 15TB volume to load this is taking 1.5 hours or so minimum.

I recall reading somewhere about the change in startup but am unable to find anything now.  Is this normal now?

I also find that the disk pool doesn't come online at all after startup; I have to issue a

nbdevconfig -changestate  -stype PureDisk -dp Dedupe-Pool -dv PureDiskVolume -state RESET

command from the Master Server to get the pool back online; a simply UP doesn't work either.  Symantec are looking at this fom me.

Anyone have any comments or suggestions?
